USTA HONORS FORMER US OPEN AND WIMBLEDON CHAMPION STAN SMITH WITH 2013 PRESIDENT’S AWARD
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 10, 2013 – The USTA has announced that former US Open and Wimbledon singles champion Stan Smith has been honored with the 2013 United States Tennis Association’s President’s Award. The announcement was made at the USTA Semi-Annual meeting last week at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.
Smith is originally from Pasadena, Calif., and starred collegiately for the University of Southern California where he won both NCAA singles and doubles titles. A former No. 1 player in the world, Smith won the US Open singles championship in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972. Pairing with his former college partner, Smith and Bob Lutz formed one of the all-time great doubles team and won four US Open doubles titles.
