Chie Tougas, Quickstart Coordinator at the Tennis Center at College Park, is the 2013 recipient of USTA Maryland’s 10 and Under Tennis Award.

This new award recognizes a facility, organizer, or teaching professional that demonstrates consistent, high-quality use of all 10 and Under Tennis format elements in youth programming.

In her work with 8U and 10U players at TCCP, Chie ensures that her students always play with an appropriately sized racquet on the right size court. Most important, Chie maintains a specific progression through red, orange, and green balls.

“Chie understands that it is not a race for kids to get to the yellow ball,” said Barbara Linke, USTA Maryland’s Jr. Team Tennis Coordinator.    “She trains her young players with purpose and meaning, and provides a solid foundation for them to build confidence in their strokes and development.”

Outcomes from the 2013 Maryland Jr. Team Tennis Championship prove the success of this deliberately paced approach to 10 and Under instruction:  TCCP teams won the 10U Beginner, 10U Intermediate, and 10U Advanced divisions of play.

Chie and her fellow USTA Maryland 2013 award winners will be recognized at a luncheon this Saturday, November 16 at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center.  Dan James, USTA National Manager, Wheelchair Tennis, is the featured speaker. Morning sessions include a 10U Tennis update at 10:15 am by Anne Davis, USTA National Manager, Play Days.
