Tiafoe and Arconadas cruise, Kingsley falls at Easter Bowl

Jordi Arconada breezed through his first round match

The matches came thick and fast for Team JTCC on Day 2 of the ASICS Easter Bowl on Tuesday. After only three matches involving JTCC players on Day 1, yesterday saw 15 matches with at least one JTCC representative.

With the doubles competition beginning, many players played both morning and afternoon, a usual occurrence made more difficult by another day of mid-90s heat in Indian Wells. For a second straight day, the heat rule was invoked for matches going to a third set; players took a ten minute break between the second and third sets.

In singles, No. 1 Francis Tiafoe, No. 4 Jordi Arconada, and No. 2 Usue Arconada made quick work of their first round opponents, each advancing in straight sets. Unseeded Josh Silverstein needed three sets, but similarly advanced 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3 over Ethan Young-Smith. Ines Vias and Brian Tsao were not so fortunate, losing their first round matches.

One player falling victim to an upset was No. 9 Raveena Kingsley, a finalist at last week’s USTA International Spring Championships in Carson.

Playing against wildcard Kayla Day, the two battled for two and a half hours with many twists and turns (including a controversial scoring dispute at 3-3 in the third set), but Kingsley ultimately fell 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the grueling heat.

After losing in Carson last week, Kingsley told the press she felt mentally and physically tired, which may have rolled over into this week. A bad day was capped off by another upset in doubles, as she lost 4-6, 4-6 as the No. 3 seed.

In other doubles results, JTCC had a similarly mixed day. No. 1 Usue Arconada and partner Katie Swan were upset 2-6, 6-7(2) while Madison Appel, Vias, and all-JTCC team Silverstein/ Tsao all lost in straight sets. All was not lost, however, with Aron Hiltzik, No. 5 Julian Zlobinsky, and Alex Letzt managing to advance to the second round. Hiltzik is one of two JTCC players still alive in both singles and doubles, with Jordi Arconada yet to play in doubles.

JTCC will look to come back from a mixed Day 2 with eight matches today, including second round singles matches for Tiafoe, Hiltzik, and Usue Arconada and an all-JTCC match between No. 4 Jordi Arconada and Josh Silverstein. Jordi Arconada, Hiltzik, Zlobinsky, and Letzt all play their second round doubles matches as well.
